Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer offers youth and adult silkscreen printing courses. Quarterly workshop courses aim to fill the creative needs of our young and most vulnerable community members, providing positive and alternative models that are otherwise not available or affordable. The workshops seek to foster civic participation, positive identity, and explore the role of art and culture as a viable community building strategy. For a schedule of classes please visit our blog.
TANA offers a state-of-the-art silkscreen-print studio that gives students the opportunity to produce their own silkscreen prints while exploring culture through visual means. More advanced students are encouraged to produce work for professional and community organizations through a program that serves as a confluence of art education and job training.
Because of the TANA’s connection to Chicana/o Studies, UC Davis student interns play an important role in its programs. Student interns direct the workshops and assist in all aspects of TANA’s operation. They also create mentorship opportunities for Woodland junior high and high school youth.
Junior high students, high school students, and adults will have the opportunity to take Taller printing workshops/classes throughout the year. The goal of the workshops/classes is to teach the silkscreen process. A second goal is to tap into the innate creative qualities of community members and introduce new cultural experiences through this creative art process. The gallery will offer students of the Taller workshops the opportunity to exhibit the prints produced in each class.
Atelier
The Atelier provides artists with the opportunity to develop their skills and experience, build a body of work, and foster their creative development. TANA’s facilities are a resource to the artists in their investigation of the silkscreen process. TANA staff and master printers assist artists in translating their creative ideas into printmaking.
Artist-in-Residence
The Atelier program also sponsors and features an Artist-in-Residence who works collaboratively with a master printer to produce limited edition silkscreen prints. Of the edition produced by the Artist-in-Residence, half is given to the artist; the other half becomes part of TANA’s collection. These are used to fundraise through exhibitions and print sales. The prints are also archived and are available for exhibitions at other locations locally, nationally, and internationally.
Theater
Though our focus is on the visual arts, TANA is committed to all forms of creative expression. We have implemented a series of community theater events helping to publicize the message of the California Department of Public Health’s Latino Campaign, which combats the proliferation of diabetes and obesity within the Chicano/Latino community. As part of this project, TANA worked closely to develop original plays with Sacramento’s Teatro Espejo, as well as the world-renowned Teatro Campesino.
Murals
As an extension of the UC Davis Chicana/o Studies Mural Workshop, TANA artists and students have created several murals in the Woodland area. These murals address issues relevant to the community and serve to bring art and culture to the general public. For images of local murals please visit our Mural Archive.
